Private security discretion: Economic rules, social norms and situational judgement in the night-time economy

This article seeks to transform private security discretion from a subject discussed in passing substantive area of research. It first draws upon the police literature construct socio-economic model discretion. then uses this explore one specific articulation discretion: moral door supervisors as they deal with serious incidents night-time economy. uncovers three distinctive rule–norm–discretion configurations: ‘enabling’ (where economic rules and standards line up facilitate straightforward mode discretion); ‘constraining’ override countervailing prevent desired ‘complex’ take precedence over prohibitive generate circuitous discretion).
